In today’s Q&A with S&J, Danielle asks us:
“What do you do with people who never confirm their email?”
Shane: What’s up guys welcome back to another Q&A with S&J. We’re super excited to be here at Cumberland Falls sitting by the Cumberland River. We had a great lunch today and we wanted to knock out some questions from our followers over on Patreon and in our Flip Your Life Community.
So, we’re going to answer another question from a Flipped Lifestyle audience member.
Jocelyn: Today’s question is from Danielle. Danielle says “What do you do with people who never confirm their email?”
Shane: Alright, so what Danielle’s talking about here is basically a double opt-in, when someone comes to your website or they go to somewhere you directed them some kind of sale page or opt-in page, they basically can give you their email address, and submit they want more.
In a lot of email service providers that will trigger an automated email that says “Hey, did you actually type your email address in? We just want to make sure before we send anything. We want to make sure you’re the one that typed your email in, so click this link and then you’ll actually be on our email list”- that’s called a double opt-in.
So what happens though is a lot of people will go put their email in and a spam filter will catch the email or they’ll forget about it, they think that we’ll go back to it and check it later. They never actually go click that link to actually get on your list, that’s what we’re actually talking about here, are double opt-ins are that people who never confirm.
You’ll find that 20-30% of people are never going to click for various reasons. Not that they didn’t like you or didn’t want your stuff, it may just be that their email got filtered and couldn’t find it.
We basically don’t worry about those at all. Those people, you’re not going to get in touch with them many times, because you don’t really know why they didn’t get your email in the first place and it’s really not worth it.
You really want to stay focused on the people who are actually getting that second opt-in, getting on your list. Those are the people you really want to focus on. Focus on sales funnel, focus on your autoresponder, focus on the people who have actually confirmed on their email address list – those are the ones that you’re going to sell to.
Don’t worry about the people who never make it passed the double opt-in.
Jocelyn: So one way that you can actually get more people to confirm, if you have an email service provider that requires a double opt-in confirmation, one thing you can do is on your Thank You Page after they opt-in to your email list is to have a video there or even just some written instructions, but I feel like a video is best that basically says, “Hey! If you want to get your freebie from me, you need to do these steps. Make sure you check your spam, bulk, promotions folder.
You can actually even show them how to do this. A lot of people use Gmail, so sometimes I will even show them me moving something from my promotions tab over into my inbox. That’s going to make sure they’re able to get their emails in the future.
Shane: Also, we’ve actually went to a single opt-in for all of our businesses. We do not require that double opt-in. Some providers don’t let you do that, some providers do. A lot of people think you have to use double opt-ins because it’s such a higher quality email because people went through steps.
We’ve not noticed much difference between single and double opt-in, in either unsubscribes or conversion rates. Okay? So you don’t have to use double opt-in if this is really driving you crazy, but if you’ll just go ahead and have a really good Thank You Page, you’ll know that they’re redirected to that Thank You Page it’s the only thing you know for sure that they’re going to see.
Like Jocelyn said, if you’ve got clear instructions there, you’re probably going to increase those opt-in rates anyway or choose a provider that only uses a single opt-in, because some of these things are pretty psychological, it drives us all crazy. So maybe if you can eliminate that in the first place, it wouldn’t bother you as bad.
