Let’s dive into this week’s question!
JOCELYN: Hey y’all! You’re listening to a Q&A with S&J.
Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work. We’re your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us, each week, as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let’s get started.
JOCELYN: Hey guys, welcome to this week’s Q&A with S&J. We are here on a very rainy, Kentucky day –
SHANE: Which you can probably hear the thunder right now.
JOCELYN: Yeah, it’s a little loud so, we are here with you today just hanging out, and thought we would answer some questions.
SHANE: Alright today’s question comes from Flip Your Life community member, Ashlyn Tengan, I’m not exactly sure how to say that Ashlyn. I know your first name is Ashlyn so we’ll go with Tengan right now. How do you think you say that? It’s T-E-N-G-A-N.
JOCELYN: I am not sure but –
SHANE: I don’t know; but either way, her website is amomintraining.com. So if you want to go ask Ashlyn how to pronounce her name and check out her content, head over there. She is a Flip Your Life community member and her question is, “After to listening to the podcast number 44 and 45, I am setting up my email autoresponder series, and my sales funnels for two different lead magnets that I have. I am using AWeber” That’s a good choice, we like people to start out with AWeber. “My plan is to create two separate lists in which their own autoresponder series sales funnels sell each product, then set up an automation rule that will put them on my main list also –” So basically you are trying to create two different email autoresponders, but get them on your main list as well. “–Since I already have about 100 email subscribers on my main list which currently has no sales funnel, but I do know which lead magnet each person subscribed through. How can I put each group of people through the right autoresponder after I create it?”
JOCELYN: Alright, this is an interesting question and I think that it actually could have multiple answers. But where I would start with the people that are already on your list is, by sending them an email and trying to get them to choose one or the other. If you have two options, maybe you would have two links there, ‘Which one would you like to learn more about, A or B?’ And then that in turn, would segment then on to another list. Now, if you wanted to start them on your new sales funnel, you probably don’t want to give them a welcome email because they already sort of, know you. So, what I would do for them is just start them out on email number two.
SHANE: So that way, you can send out one broadcast email that has the two options and let them kind of jump in to where they want to be at that point. And then you can kind of just work them into the main part of your list.
JOCELYN: So it’s a little bit unclear to me if the people who subscribe to each lead magnet are the way that you are wanting them segmented; if that’s true, I mean, you can go ahead and segment them on to your other list and to start them at email number two of those particular sales funnels. But if they are unrelated to the new sales funnels that you have created, I would do it the way I was talking about earlier where you would send them an email, let them respond by clicking one thing or another, and then put them on to that other list.
SHANE: I think a bigger issue here, Ashlyn, and the reason we are having trouble kinda seeing it all put together is because I think you are doing this in a very confusing way, and I think a lot of people make this mistake. You can have multiple lead magnets but you only have one email autoresponder campaign. So basically think about it like you know, you got more than one door that leads into the same hallway. Once you are in the hallway, you are moving down a direction. That’s your autoresponder. So your sequence might be, you know, you may write seven or eight emails in the beginning; when people sign up, bam, they go in and they all go down the same message that you want people to deliver. You know, you ask them their problems, you tell them what you are about, you get them deeper into your brand that way, but all the doors that lead into that one hallway are all of your different lead magnets. When we have people sign up for multiple lead magnets on any of our websites, like take my history site for example, I have like 15 lead magnets. I mean, if you are looking for a Civil War lesson plan, you are going to come in at one point. If you are going into the World War I lesson plan, you are going to come in at another point but you are going on to one single, email autoresponder list. Your autoresponder is something that is definite and infinite. It is something that keeps getting added to, keeps growing over time, people keep coming into it from different doors, but they are all getting one email list. You don’t need an autoresponder set up for every single lead magnet. Now what you can have are little side branches, or side paths where people like say you might have a PS that says, ‘Hey, I’ve got this new thing’, and you might write a couple of emails over to the side that people who click on that link get like, Jocelyn was saying earlier, you put those two links in and if they click something, they might go to a sales page or they might go down a little bit shorter path but you don’t need an autoresponder for every single lead magnet. You don’t want to do that, you want one autoresponder that is one big, hallway and you are going to fill that hallway and it’s just going to keep growing and keep extending into the future, and take people into your content where you have new blog posts, or you have – ‘Follow me on social media’ or ‘Check this out, I’ve got a cool thing here’, but you are not going to create, you know, a 20-email autoresponder for every single lead magnet that you ever create. We’ve got something like ten lead magnets floating out there for Flipped Lifestyle, they all go in one list. Now, if like you said, you know where they came in at, you got all of that data, if you come up with a product that is related to that email segment, then you can send that group of people another message to send them to that sales page or whatever but you are not going to create – that would be very hard to do to create an email autoresponder for every single lead page that you have. What you want is to create a lot of lead magnets to get people in in different ways but they are all going on to one autoresponder list. Don’t make more work on yourself than is necessary.
JOCELYN: All in all Ashlyn, I think what we are trying to say is just keep it simple, you don’t need a separate autoresponder for every single lead magnet that you may have. It is good to segment your list certainly, but don’t feel like you have to do it from the very beginning because we are afraid that you’re going to get burn-out and not be able to sell anyone anything because you are too busy trying to send them in too many different directions.
SHANE: Yeah, once you flesh out a nice, general, autoresponder that everyone who signs up anywhere on your website goes through, then you can say, okay, I’ve got a product that I have just created, I think these 300 people on my list of a thousand emails would be high-quality leads for this specific product, so I am going to go in and send those people an email about this product. That’s your branch off of the main hallway, but the most important thing is just make sure that anyone that signs up on your email list is getting a consistent email coming from you on a set time schedule, and they are going to be followed up with, talked to, nurtured and that they have become a part of your audience long term.
JOCELYN: Hope that helps answer your question Ashlyn and anyone else out there who has questions about autoresponders and sales funnels.
SHANE: We also want to point out that this month, July 2015, when you are listening to this, is going to be email autoresponder month.
