JOCELYN: Hey y’all and Merry Christmas! On today’s show, we are going to catch up on some Flip podcast guest to see what’s happening on their online businesses.

SHANE: What’s going on guys, welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. Merry Christmas to everybody out there about to celebrate the birth of Jesus and Santa Claus coming to town. We’re only a couple of days away now from Christmas actually happening and we wanted to bring you a special addition of the Flipped Lifestyle podcast this week. We are bringing back two of our former guests on flipped podcast. Those are members of our Flip Your Life Community who we give a free consulting call to and we answer four or five of their questions to help them take their business to the next level on those calls. We wanted to bring a couple of guests back to tell you what has happened since they came on the Flipped Lifestyle podcast and how Flip Your Life, our membership community where we help other people with their online business, has helped them take their business to the next level. So today we are bringing back Brad Barrett and Shelley Hits and we are going to hear a little bit of their story about how they took action on the advice that we gave them on the Flipped Lifestyle podcast and let them report back to you the results that the achieved because of those calls. We also answer a few new questions from our guests today to take their business even further and deliver even more value for our guests so we know that you’re not only going to be inspired by the stories on today’s podcast but you’re also going to learn a little more to help you take your online dreams to the next level as well. The first person we would like to welcome back to the show is Brad Barrett.
BRAD: Yeah, thanks so much for having me. I appreciate it.
JOCELYN: We’re really excited to talk to you and find out all of our listeners or a lot of them have been emailing us and they want to know what happen to several of these people so we’re excited that you’re here with us today. So tell us what has happened to you since.
BRAD: It has been incredibly interesting and exciting couple of months. I actually decided to go all-in and quit my accounting job.
SHANE: What?!
BRAD: I officially flipped my life as you guys has been saying and it has been the most amazing couple of months. It’s almost hard to believe that these has all horned just in the last few months since I have been on.
JOCELYN: Yeah, it’s hard for us to believe sometimes now too.
SHANE: Let me ask you this. What was your income before, when you got on the Flipped podcast, what were you making online and what was the improvement? You also went through Flip Your Life, if you remember in our Flip Your Life Community. So you had training after the call too. Give us the timelier, how did your income grow? How many months that it take to get to the point where you are like I am making enough now, I have got this, I finally made it to the next level and I have confidence that I can go and quit my job, my 9 to 5?
BRAD: That’s a great question Shane. My income certainly had increased and it has increased fairly dramatically since the call. You know I think also a lot of it was the confidence level. After speaking with you guys, after going through the Flip Your Life course, it was not only the confidence but just knowing that this was my opportunity. If you guys can do this and be so successful, if other people you have helped that I have heard on your calls, to do this and be successful then I need to really dedicate myself and go all in. I mean that’s not just the euphemism. I need to really do this because I’ll regret it for the rest of my life so I think that was the function of my income improving. After speaking with you guys, I realized my whole process of doing the one-on-one coaching calls especially the free coaching calls, it just didn’t make sense. There was no way to scale it.
SHANE: It wasn’t sustainable at all.
BRAD: Right absolutely. You guys made me see that and since then I actually teamed up with a friend of mine and we formed a course actually. It’s a travel miles one-on-one course and we have been able to get—yeah it’s fantastic—we have been able to get 500 people in this course for the last couple of months.
SHANE: That’s incredible dude.
BRAD: Without spending one dollar on advertising that you walk in.
SHANE: That’s the power, for those of you who can’t remember we’ll link in the show notes of this episode to Brad’s episode but Brad teaches people how to use travel rewards to go on vacations for free basically. He has a great program, very legit so solid on teaching people on how to do things like that and he was trading time for dollars, or not even time for dollars, he was getting people on free calls.
JOCELYN: Time for free.
SHANE: Time for free, or whatever to teach them and then they would pay to teach them maybe a little bit more on how to do this or sign up and get more affiliates off of that. That’s why we so stressed people to use these digital products because when you create a digital product, in Flip Your Life, you’ll learn how to create an eBook, we have got a new course that teaches you how to make digital courses like we are talking about now. You don’t have to trade time for dollars anymore, you just have to show people the benefit and get them in your course and the video will do all the work for you and all the training and the PDFs and whatever that you have inside your course. So when did you quit your job? What month did you actually quit?
BRAD: It was basically February course. That entire idea for that course we were running comes from the Flip Your Life Course actually. Everything that you guys did I am like this is brilliant. The Facebook group especially, I mean it’s such a wonderful community in the Flip Your Life group. To me obviously you guys teaching and having access to you is great but being in that course with other entrepreneurs, it’s just a nice experience. So to me, to tell you guys what my favorite part of Flip Your Life, it’s clearly that so we made something like that with this Travel Miles course it has just taken on a life of its own. I mean there is just dozens of new postings every day and people asking questions, other people answering for us. It’s just a wonderful community. Now we have this thing on autopilot and it’s set up for Mail Chimp and have automatic emails going out every day. It’s just rinse and repeat. Obviously I have to update the course in there.
SHANE: You get more people in there. That’s the main thing. That’s where the work comes in, it’s getting more people in the course and things like that. That’s awesome man. We have a lot of material in Flip Your Life. There are three courses in there now with like 30 videos in each one. So it’s like 90 videos that you can go through if you want to and you have the community and all the things that happened in there but you went through it and di it. You actually took action. That’s why I think a lot of people they see these courses as a magic bullet but if you don’t do what happens in the course, you’re not going to make a successful business out of it. So the community is a big thing that you got out of it, but what was the one thing that you learned that you were in the coaching call or in Flip Your Life that really impacted what you were going to do and how you are like got out of that old mindset and took it to the new business that you have now?
BRAD: It was definitely the concept of scale. If I was trying to help people which trying to help people. Of course, it’s nice to make money, I mean don’t get me wrong. F course at the end of the day we need to feed or families and all that stuff but just like you guys are trying to help a thousand families. I am trying to help a thousand families get to Disneyworld, or go on to that dream trip to Paris. There is no conceivable way I can do that one person at a time. So it was a mindset shift. That would not have been possible without you guys. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s remarkable.
JOCELYN: Yeah we are so proud of you. Can you tell our listeners that there might be some people out there that who are interested in doing this, where can they find you online?

BRAD: That sounds great. We’ll love that. That will be awesome. Hopefully you guys like that video.
SHANE: definitely man. So let me ask you this, if you have someone that was on the fence about starting an online business r had started an online business and they had a goal that I want to quit my job, I want to make enough money to have extra money live off of whatever because you were in the nine to five making extra money camp and then you moved to the I am quitting my job, I am going with this full-time. So looking back if you could talk to Brad, when he was making a little bit extra money on the side, talk to our audience members who are going into online business of what advice would you give them, not join Flip Your Life or anything like that but like what advice would you give them at that stage where you were to get to where you were now.
BRAD: That is a great question. I would say to me it’s a mentality. It’s knowing that this is real. Okay for a lot of people, they see these gurus online and you guys are always talking about gurus. That doesn’t seem real. It doesn’t resonate with the regular person. But seeing you guys go through this and knowing that a regular family can do this. That to me was the first thing that this is absolutely real. That also to stick with it. This is not an overnight success by any means. I am sure guys, Shane, juts listening to your podcast about shiny objects, you jump from thing to thing. Frankly, I have been doing kind of gambling on online business for a couple of years now probably four years, similar to you, shiny object. Just every little all down to the ridiculous, make money online world of absence clicks and all of these stuff and I would say find your passion and go with it and stick with it and know that it’s real because I did so many things that I just had no passion for. This travel reward stuff, I love and I love working—I can do this 24 hours a day if I didn’t have to sleep. I love it.
SHANE: It only took four years to become an overnight success Brad.
BRAD: exactly.
SHANE: I think it’s a good point man because people think that there is a magic bullet and it’s like what you said that there comes a point where you just need the right advice or the right motivation and that’s what you found with Flip Your Life and Flipped Lifestyle but you put in the work and it took you a long time once you figured it out. But then, you finally stumbled across something that helped you beat the learning curve and that’s really a great lesson for everybody out there. Keep working, keep hustling, and find that thing that get you to the next level basically.
BRAD: Look at it as a journey. I mean every day I was learning something new. I don’t think it will take the person off the street four years to do this. I took the slow route but everything you learned, look at it as getting an MBA. This is a new business. In most cases, it’s free or close to free. Sure signing up for a fantastic course like Flip Your Life, it’s not free but you have an investment and I am sure that you are going to—you know Harvard business school for $60,000 a year. I mean I would pick Flip Your Life over Harvard business school in a heartbeat.
JOCELYN: You heard it here first.
SHANE: Look out Harvard Ivy League, we are taking you down. That’s like the greatest quote I ever heard in my life. That’s great.
JOCELYN: I’d love to make that tweetable.
SHANE: I love that word investment that you used we got one more question here for you real quick I love that word investment, we have bene using that a lot lately. I think the word investment reflects the entire mindset shift that you are talking about because you go from thinking I have got to do all this work to start an online business or I have got to spend all this money to set up my WordPress and by hosting and I just don’t have the money, I don’t have the time. But that mindset shift that you went through, you know what I am going to invest in my future. I’m going to invest this money to get it, I’m going to invest this time to set this up and then I am going to go forward.
JOCELYN: Alright, our brand is all about bringing it back to our family and just opportunities that we have now. We call them ‘can’t-miss moments’ so I am just wondering if you can share a recent can’t-miss moment with our audience—was something that you have been able to do recently that you were not able to do before you start an online business or before you had quit your job.
BRAD: sure, there are so many. It’s so amazing. Just being here, being here and having lunch every day with my daughter or sitting and reading 10 books instead of being at a nine to five office job. That’s the every day stuff, being there when my older daughter gets off the bus and she run down the stairs and gives me a hug and screams daddy. I mean all of these just amazing things. Then just knowing that our lives are ours now. We aren’t slaves to my job. Of course I do these travel reward stuff, right? We want our girls to see the world. Now, Lauren and I have these plans where every single summer, we are going to take a month or six weeks and go live in another city. It might be Santiago, Chile, to visit my brother or Dublin, Ireland or somewhere in Alaska. We have all these grand plans that weren’t possible before, we flipped our lives and they weren’t possible before, we met you guys and we got this great advice. So it has been amazing.
SHANE: I’m like crying.
JOCELYN: I’m speechless.
SHANE: Jocelyn and I are looking at each other and we are like, oh my God, is this really insane. I have literally tears in my eyes. I’m a football coach, I got to suck it up here.
BRAD: Real men cry.
SHANE: That’s right. Real men cry.
JOCELYN: We think you’re too kind first of all. We really appreciate this. But you had to do a lot to get here. We are just so thankful that we could be any part of what you have done that you can share it with our audience.
SHANE: Alright man, listen I appreciate you taking some time out of your busy schedule of enjoying can’t-miss moments and making money to come on the show here and hanging with us man. We’re really proud of you and we are so glad that we were able to follow-up with you. The most important part about doing shows like this we are really not trying to brag on us. We are not trying to brag on our course, it’s you said, we just want to prove over and over and over again, this is possible. This is real, this is not just the only way you can make money online is to sell making money online because we make money online doing other things, you make money online doing other things and everyone out there has something that they can offer the world to help. People need the information that you have to live a better life you just have to put it out ther enad build a business around I man. So congratulations dude. I am really excited because we are bringing back one of our Flipped podcast guests and we want them to share a little success story of what happened in their online business after they talked to us on the show. Today’s guest is Shelley Hitz. Shelley, welcome back to the show.
SHELLEY: Thank you so much. I’m excited to be back.
JOCELYN: Yeah if you missed Shelley’s first episode on the Flipped podcast, you can check that out at flippedlifestyle.com/podcast31. Alright Shelley, so first of all, let’s talk about what happened after your call with us.
SHELLEY: I really got motivated to take action and after you call and you guys just gave me a step by step plan and it was actually after the call ended and we stopped recording, you gave me like the exact steps of launching my bet group.
SHANE: that’s an unexpected bonus right there guys. That’s the extra stuff, the extra value.
SHELLEY: I know. It was amazing and so I was furiously taking notes and I just was like I am going to do this and I set a date. I started laying out what I was going to do, I finished setting up my member’s area and I had zero content ready, nothing and I launched my beta group to my list and filled my 20 beta group spots. And so initially I was able to get some income and before I even created any of the content and so I took massive action and just really got that beta group going and it was really because of the motivation I have got after your call.
SHANE: So how many people were on your list that you marketed this pre-launch to, was it like thousands of people or like how many people that you have on that list?
SHELLEY: I have been helping authors for several years so I have a big list and then I used a custom audience on Facebook and that was one thing Jocelyn had recommended to me just afterwards.
SHANE: Did you upload that same email list in to market to those people and other people?
SHELLEY: Yeah. So I have a list of customers that bought from me before. I used that and that’s how I really ill those initial spots and then I had a couple of speaking engagements and sold my beta group in that circumstance too. So it really worked out well.
SHANE: Now how much did you make or you can share just like figures or if you want to actually share numbers, how much did you actually make on that launch?
SHELLEY: Well, it’s interesting because I have my beta signature program and then I have a smaller product and it’s just my entry level product that people can come and get to know me and after the call, we didn’t really talk about it but I decided to launch that as well. I give a coupon and people can just get it for $10. My signature program is going to eventually be $199 or $197 but I launched it for $199 so I sold 20 spots for $199 and I also sold a bunch of the $10 products and really I had within I don’t know a couple of weeks I had like $6,000 in sales.
JOCELYN: That is amazing.
SHANE: That is awesome. That’s amazing.
JOCELYN: It’s just because you decided to take action and get something done.
SHANE: Because I remember we talked to you like you were like you wanted to make this big huge course and we always tell people that sometimes you think you want to make something but you don’t know truly what people want but if you pre-launch it and you have some kind of audience and you had a big audience but it doesn’t matter if you got a couple of hundred people on your email list you can still go to Facebook, create those custom audiences and find more people. You voted that process, you now know that people voted with their money and said yes please make this course. So you didn’t spend this huge amount of time with no money in your pocket. You just went and said do you want to buy this. Hey did and then you made it with the money already in your pocket.
SHELLEY: The awesome thing is that I am almost halfway through creating the content. Once this content created most of it as evergreen. I may have to update things every once and a while but I will be able to continue earning and the biggest takeaway I took away from our call is I wanted to launch my podcast first. I was really excited about it and I love helping people, I love giving value, I love giving things away for free but you guy were like, Shell, you need something to sell.
SHANE: It’s not a business until you have a product. We always tell you that.
JOCELYN: Yeah a podcast is not a business.
SHANE: Podcast is a hobby, it’s fun, it’s like picking up the phone and calling your audience and having a good talk with them. But at the end of the day unless you’re selling massive advertising on your podcast, it’s not making you money, you got to have a product selling to those people listening.
SHELLEY: Exactly. So I am getting ready to launch my podcast probably within the next month and now I will have a product to sell and be able to funnel them into that area. And be able to do webinars and sell them into my higher end products and so anyways the takeaway, get the product done.
SHANE: You got to get the product done. I was just on a call with somebody giving us with some consulting information and it was the same thing. They spelled out this huge plan. I mean they are like a two year plan about all the content they were going to create and how are they going to take people A to Z through this process, to do something and I am like but that’s going to take you a year to create and they are like it takes forever but once it’s done it’s like everybody wants. But I am like well you’re not going to make any money for a year, you are just going to be making stuff and they just pause and they get really, really quiet and I was like why don’t you just make A and sell that. And they were like yeah I can do that in about a week and I am like alright well do that then why wait a year?
JOCELYN: Yeah and you know what something is that pushes you on. When you have people waiting there for your content and they are giving you real time feedback, I mean that just really keeps the ball rolling. And even in those days where you are just like I just don’t want to do this you know you have to keep going.
SHANE: And then when you sold that product to those people as you are making it and things are rolling out, did it look a little different when it was done compared to what you would thought it would look like, when you designed the program?
SHELLEY: You know I ended up creating the outline as I went and I am actually still working the outline as I go but yeah, I got feedback from my students and I can make it an even better course. What I love is you know there is little mistakes, a little glitches or tech issues and I am getting all of those figured out. If something was unclear, they will ask in the Facebook group. I didn’t understand this, or what was that and I am like, oh yeah I need to add that. And so I t’s just making such a better course than if I would have everything done previous.
SHANE: We did the same thing with our—we just created a course to show people how to set up WordPress and a website basically. Very simple, just to basically build a place for your product that you create first to love and we released an outline for that. We have 40 points on the outline and we said that this is what you are signing up for, this is what we want to put in the course but when we got into it we were able to actually create less because people were scratching things off from the outline like but you kind of went over this in part three or I already know how to do that and this, that and the other so the course actually got smaller while it got more valuable. If we just went and the course first, what we would have made 10 other videos that didn’t even need t be in this thing because nobody had wanted that. So we were actually able to not only make money upfront but save time and create a better more streamline product.
JOCELYN: So let’s talk a little bit about your students’ success because I know they have had some success so far already in your program.
SHELLEY: So really the amazing thing, Jocelyn is always saying get video testimonials, get video testimonials. And one of my students, she is so motivated and she is like my biggest fan, she is telling everyone about me but she published her Kindle book within the first month and became a number one Amazon best-selling author in her category the very first day using my strategies of keywords, just everything that I teach in the course. Then another student she had been dreaming and wanting to be an author, a published author for over 20 years and she has all of these manuscripts and all these things that she wants to publish. He published three books on the first month and now is living out her dream of 20 years. And so, I have some really powerful testimonials. Those two gave me video testimonials and then I have another person hat finished her book in the first 30 days and gave me a video testimonial as well. So it’s really exciting. It motivates me and it’s fun to see 4them getting the results.
SHANE: And when you launch this thing, the second time, it’s going to be so much easier to sell because now, because you pre-sold and get it out there, because you got the feedback, the follow-up to ask people what they wanted and now they have success that’s proof that what you’re teaching is working and you may have started making the course, you may still be making the course and none of it may have ever happened. But you got it done first, you got people in and you started that process. I’m always amazed by the ripple effect like people are always like, I don’t know if I can really teach anything online or I don’t know who would ever listen to me but just you doing what you have done all these years and gaining all these knowledge, us just giving you a little nudge to take a little action, it’s like that pebble on the pond. You picked up the pebble, you took action, you threw it on the pond, people came and it just rippled out and then other people are succeeding because of that and it’s just amazing just to see how you can impact people’s lives through a digital product.
SHELLEY: Exactly. And one of my students on the beta program has actually approached me about possibly being a keynote speaker at an author event in Canada in the next couple of years and so t there are so many things that are coming out of this and so many good things that happened when you just take action. I told my husband CJ and I said you know this is not normally how I would really like to do things because I like to have things ready. I like to have things done. They paid for it, I like to have it ready and done and here is your stuff. But there has bene so much value to doing it this way and I really am glad that I took this stuff and I took the action.
SHANE: There are some hybrid things you can do too. I understand what you’re saying like, so one of the things that we try to do is maybe to have three things like maybe we are going to make this 30-video course. Then maybe we are like video one, 90% sure might be this and it’s only 20 or 30 minutes. Or maybe you can make on part of it just to give them, as soon as they sign in and go somewhere they have got something to do. We even use old content. When we launched Flip Your Life the first time, we didn’t have any of the videos done. We were just like here is the plan, you want to buy? We got like 25, was it 25 or 30 something like that on the first one. We got 25 or 30 people in but what we did was we don’t have anything made, what are these people going to do we don’t want them to wait two weeks. So we just went back and found five really good pieces of content that people needed to do like our podcast about how we started an online business while having kids and a full-time job. We created our calendar podcast where we show people how to schedule their week. We just took old piece of content and put them together into like mini action plan and that gave people something to do and it was amazing seeing the people in the group when they started doing that they were like I never heard this episode or I didn’t see the handout that went with this one. Because 90% of people don’t see 90% of your content so we just reused that and gave them something to do upfront.
SHELLEY: Yeah that’s a great idea.
JOCELYN: Yeah I love what you’re doing. I think it is fantastic. You absolutely took action and you’re making it happen.
SHANE: Have you ever made that much money that quick on a launch before?
SHELLEY: I haven’t. I sold mostly lower end price products. I have been in internet marketing for over a decade but it’s supposed have been $27, $47 that sort of thing and so to have a $200 product and to sell it that way and then the $10 product sold too and today I am just looking at my stats I have sold over almost $8500 since I last talked to you so it just keeps growing.
SHANE: That’s amazing. That’s the power of having higher prices that work there. The other stuff was probably priced correctly. I am just saying if you can just add a few layers of value and charge more, boy it’s a lot easier to sell one thing for $200 than it I sometimes four things or eight things for $25 because you are going to find eight new people. Well let’s talk about this then we got this thing going, we got the ball rolling and we just wanted to share your success story because these are so motivating for people to hear real people in real niches, not online marketing but are actually making some money online and good money online. So let’s talk about what’s next. We wanted to give you some extra value here, do you have any questions or need help with anything in your online business right now? SHELLEY: I have a whole list of authors but I’m really looking at a different audience with my new product and the things that I launched since our last call so I am building a new way a new audience and a new list and I am wanting to do Facebook ads to build my list so that then I can promote this product to those people and I don’t know if you guys have advice on the best way to bring new people in, to continue to sell my program.
SHANE: We had a similar question to this on our consulting call. It wasn’t on air, this was an actual paid call where he had a large list but it was kind of the same thing. But all the people on this list aren’t really the people that would buy my product. There is a different audience than he was looking for. The first thing we did is we had him create a very simple three email sequence. It was to organize the list he had because he had a lot of people coming to his website every day but he need to filter them somehow and you have got kind of a lot of people on the email list now so I would start first maybe something that voted those people like an email list like an a weber. You can put two links in. One goes to one page and one goes to the other and you can create a question that when people answer whichever link they click on that’s going to put them on a segment and that identifies maybe a thousand of those 7,000 are your perfect customer for this new audience for this new product. Maybe some of them can filter through. Do that first, identify 500 a thousand people then go upload that into Facebook and do the rest.
JOCELYN: then you can do that a look alike audience. Find people who look like those people.
SHANE: So basically, take what you’ve got. Don’t go after the cold people. You already got a lot of people in there. Just identify which of those 7,000 are the actual thousand ideal customers for this thing not because they are going to pay money just let them click a link to say yeah I agree with this and then you go into Aweber and then you segment or whatever you’re using, Mail Chimp, it doesn’t matter; you just go say everybody that click that link 887 clicked that link, turn that into a segment now you can email them to sell them a new product and then download that as a CSV file upload them into Facebook, find a look alike audience and run ads. Now those are going to be much warmer leads to find those new people faster.
SHELLEY: Okay yeah that make sense. It was something I am wanting to do anyways because I teach on writing and publishing but I also teach on marketing and it’s kind of two different things whether you have a book or you don’t have a book so I need to segment my list anyways.
SHANE: So what you could do is Jocelyn does this, she is a pro at this on Elementary Librarian she has got everybody figured out. You send them like a poll like you say what your biggest problem in the library right now or whatever. She might say like classroom discipline or I need lesson plans or something else.
JOCELYN: I even like to make little pictures and kind of box for them to click. Or you could say like I am working on a new product, what’s do you need the most help with? Do you need the most help with book marketing or B or C?
SHANE: So for you, you could say what’s your biggest struggles right now as Kindle author or as an author or whatever and then you might say, I need help finishing my eBook, I need help marketing my eBook. Let’s just say it’s two choices and then all the people that click on the marketing thing, you can funnel them toward a marketing, all the people that click on your email that I need help finishing my book, we focus on the product that writes the book and you segment those people and as people buy into your first program, now they move to the marketing list once they are finished. So you have really identified who to target with. So if you’re going to do a look alike audiences the first one might be an ad that says hey need help finishing you book, click here I got a plan and the next one might be got a book you need to sell, let me show you how to market it on Kindle and then you pushed them to the other product.
SHELLEY: Yeah that make sense. Thanks.

JOCELYN: Yeah you got it done so way to go girl.
SHANE: We always want to say that you guys are doing it sometimes you just need an arrow pointing left or right but man you guys take action and it’s just amazing seeing what you guys can accomplish when you get out there and do something.
