In today’s Q&A, we help you cut through the clutter and let you in on what podcasts we listen to in our spare time (it’s a lot less than you probably think).
Are you overwhelmed by information overload? It can happen!
When you start out online, you can easily fall into the trap of listening to every podcast on iTunes about online business.
This can cause confusion as you hear so many conflicting messages (and boredom, because some shows are awful).
Don’t listen to everyone! Check out today’s show and we will help you find the best voices for couple-preneurs online!
Do you have a question you want to be answered on our podcast? We would love to help you!

Let’s dive into this week’s question!
JOCELYN: Hey y’all! You’re listening to Q&A with S&J.
SHANE: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We’re your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us each week as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside down by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let’s get started.
JOCELYN: Hey ya’ll, welcome back to the Q&A mini-podcast with Shane and Jocelyn. We are glad that you joined us today. Today’s question comes from Jonathan Simpson and it says:
“I love your podcast, guys. What podcasts do you guys listen to on a regular basis? Do you have any you recommend?”
This is a very, very interesting question, Jonathan, because…
SHANE: Because we are podcasters.
JOCELYN: … yeah, it may sound a little crazy because we do multiple, weekly podcast shows but I actually do not listen to any podcast regularly right now and I know…
SHANE: I force her to, basically.
JOCELYN: Yeah. I actually love listening to podcasts. There are tons of great ones out there. I mean, we listen to a lot and Shane will tell you some of the ones that we listen to.
SHANE: Or I listen to a lot not “we” because I can ever get her to listen to them with me.
JOCELYN: I do sometimes. You guys probably have heard me talk a lot of the time about being a very sequential person. I’m a person who can only wrap my head around one big thing at a time and right now, my big thing is home decorating. So any free few moments that I get are usually spent like on Pinterest right now trying to find things because I’m pretty much terrible at decorating my house so I want to find people who are good at it and maybe like copy them. But that is what most of my time is spent doing right now. It’s crazy to say but as a podcaster, I don’t really listen to any podcast regularly.
SHANE: What Jocelyn does though is Jocelyn would buy a course and just hammer it. She’s a very focused person so she might pick up a little video or how to do something or she’s trying to figure something out, instead of just listening to a general podcast, she’ll just learn it and do it right then. That’s kind of how she consumes online information. I do listen to a couple of podcasts at the gym or maybe when I’m taking a shower. We love Pat Flynn. We still listen to Pat Flynn. We listen to every episode that comes out.
JOCELYN: At Smart Passive Income.
SHANE: Yes, the Smart Passive Income podcast with Pat Flynn over at SmartPassiveIncome.com. We also listen to the new business podcast with Chris Ducker and you can find Chris at ChrisDucker.com. He’s got a lot of information. Chris is a businessman and he just has a lot of sense with the brick and mortar world and the online space. He’s got a lot of good perspectives and it’s not just all guests on his show. He gives a lot of insight on his own. We’ve actually listened to, or I’ve actually been listening to Greg Hickman of the Mobile Mix Podcast lately because Jocelyn and I are just getting into text messaging and how we can incorporate that into our brand and how we can communicate with our audience that way. Greg Hickman is an expert at that.
JOCELYN: Speaking of that, if you would like to join our text list, you can…
SHANE: Ooh nice segue, I like that. Good job.
JOCELYN: Yeah, right. You can text “QASJ” to 38470 and we’ll text you.
SHANE: That was an excellent segue. That’s a brilliant internet marketing right there, folks. But anyway, those are three of the podcasts that I’ve been listening to lately – mainly Pat Flynn, Chris Ducker, and Greg Hickman – but I only listen to a couple of episodes.
I don’t listen to everything that they all put out. I usually listen to Pat’s every week but the other guys, I just kind of pick up when I’m at the gym or when I‘ve got a little time. The reason that we don’t listen to a lot of podcasts is because there’s so much information out there and so much of it is conflicting.
If you just sit and listen to podcast all day or if you’ve got an hour commute and you’re listening to 10 podcasts a week, two work at home every single day, then you’re going to have an information overload and you’re going to have so much stuff in front of you, you’re not going to know where to start, you’re not going to know what to take action on. You’re not going to know who is accurate, who’s telling the truth, or who is giving you great information. We highly recommend that you only select one or two podcasts that you listen to on a regular basis.
Pick the voices that you trust the most, that seem to give you the most information, that seemed to resonate with you and that you relate to, and only listen to that content. That way, you’ll prevent that information overload because you’re only getting a very limited amount of information that way.
There’s an important concept when you’re learning about anything that is called “just in time learning” where basically, you only need information right when you’re trying to do something. If you’ve created a digital product and you’re about to advertise it and you want to advertise on Facebook, well there’s no reason for you to listen to 50 podcasts in the past about Facebook advertising. What you need to do right then, right there is research how to advertise on Facebook, learn it, and do it. If you start listening to 10, 20, 30 podcasts all the time, you’re going to get so confused, you’ll never going to take action.
If you look at yourself right now in the mirror and say, “How many podcasts do I listen to?” “I listen to six podcasts a week everyone that comes out” or “I’m listening to every Entrepreneur on Fire every single day.” There’s nothing wrong with that podcast. It’s a great podcast but if you’re listening to things every day and you’re listening to every voice in the marketplace, you’re eventually going to become confused and paralyzed. You can probably say to yourself, “Man, I’m not taking action because I’ve got so much information.”
Another thing is a lot of podcasts talk about varying topics and if they are talking about extremely high-level things but you’re a beginner, then you’re going to be wasting a lot of your time getting information that you just don’t need right now and what you really need to do is just take something that you do know, take action on it, and make it happen. While there are a lot of great podcasts out there and we appreciate you so much for listening to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. We highly recommend that you really narrow your scope down and focus on one or two voices and pick the one that you like. The ones that we like may not be right for you. Whatever you like, whatever you relate to, go with that, enjoy it, and take action on it.
JOCELYN: If you’re interested in couples in online business, you probably are since you’re here at our podcast, you may also like our friends over at ScrewtheNinetoFive.com, Jill and Josh Stanton. They interview couples who are making it in online business and that might be one that you want to check out if you haven’t listened.
SHANE: If you like our show where you have a husband and wife working together, Jill and Josh are very similar to us. They are kind of the rated R version of us which makes us laugh all the time.
JOCELYN: And the younger version of us.
SHANE: And the younger version of us because we’re old. We’re mid-30s. We’re old people. They have a great show. We talk a lot about the same topics, about how to work with your spouse and how to start an online business as a couple. It’s just a great complement to what we do over here at FlippedLifestyle.com.
JOCELYN: All right, Jonathan. We hoped that that helps. I hope that you maybe get some ideas of some podcasts to check out. Thanks for listening. Again, if you want to join our text list, text over “QASJ” to 38470.
SHANE: Until next time, we’ll catch you on the flip side.
JOCELYN: See you later, bye.
