Story Notes
Rebecca Haas is a speech pathologist and fitness coach and has been doing both nearly 20 years now. When she was pregnant with her twins (that are now 8-years-old) she was on bedrest which was hard for her. So, in her extra time she wrote her book “Talking With Toddlers: 52 Tips To Boost Speech and Language Skills” to keep herself busy. She continued to write after they were born and it reached the Best Seller category on Kindle when she published it! She started blogging and opened her own medical practice after working in a school system for 4 years (which she decided just wasn’t her thing). It was her blog though that would get her foot in the door of the online business space and reaching more people!
Rebecca had continued her journey online for several years. At one point she even made little calendars of activities and sold them on Teachers Pay Teachers. When the pandemic started they sold like hot cakes! The big reason she wants to expand her online business by incorporating the membership model is to use the material in her book and the calendars to reach more people than what clients she has in-person at her practice.
She has seen how well her calendars have done online with no advertising. Her biggest question now? How to turn her calendars into a membership site!
How to build a community around a subscription.
Rebecca’s membership is a little different average. For this we’re going to talk about how to build a community around a subscription. A subscription and a membership are not the same thing. A subscription is based around consuming something. Ex. a subscription meal box. You get and you’re good. What makes something a membership is when you build a community and wrap that community around it. In the Flip Your Community – yes there’s courses to consume but we’ve built a following around this. The same thing can be done in a subscription level too. This is exactly what we do with Membership Masters.
It’s not as hard as you think.
We don’t think Rebecca should mail her calendar with: 4 or 5 sheets of paper, a letter from Rebecca, they open it up and it has two sides of the calendar and then the back has information for finding the resources online. You don’t mail people all the resources because you want them to log into the community and interact.
Rebecca’s subscription would be really powerful because this parents would look forward to the subscription hitting their mailbox.
Rebecca could also experiment on her blog and write them a couple times a month. She can make it her mission to communicate with them. By talking about everything big to small or even unrelated to the membership she can truly build a community. They only thing missing is the community interacting with each other but that can easily be solved by creating Facebook group for her members.
How do you lead people into your subscription?
For Rebecca her best lead magnet is her book – one of the best book funnels is “free + shipping.” Rebecca could send them a digital copy because she wants them to see how good her book is. Then, people start realizing how awesome it would be to have access to her each month and join her membership!
What are your next steps?
For Rebecca her very next steps are:
- Researching printers to get the ball rolling on her calendar subscriptions.
- Writing a letter to go along with each of her calendars.
- Expanding on her calendar they way we talked about by adding instructions to the them to her membership and login.
