It’s lunchtime over here in the Bluegrass State.
As I settle in for some food and my 3rd cup of coffee, I got to thinking about what lunch was like when I was a teacher.
Before Jocelyn and I quit our jobs, lunch was a time I would hide in my classroom, turn off the lights save a lamp on my desk, and just eat in silence.
No radio, no kids, no internet… just me and my food.
It was an oasis in the desert of my day.
Looking back on that, it was kind of sad.
I was so overwhelmed by the demands of others — principals, colleagues, coaches, parents, students, players — on top of my responsibilities to my family at home, that I would HIDE from it all at lunch.
I wasn’t enjoying the peace and quiet, I was being crushed by the demands of my 9 to 5…er, 7 to 3 for teachers.
Wait… I coached football.
7 to 7.
Now, I calmly roll into lunch and use it as a time to expand my mind.
To add to my job, not hide from it.
Sometimes I read books, sometimes I pray and read my bible.
Sometimes I watch a video of something I need to learn about or fire up a Ted talk for a little afternoon inspiration.
OK, sometimes I just turn on my Xbox and play video games.
I was just sitting here and realized that I’m so thankful that my life has flipped upside down to a point where I can enjoy the little things in life like LUNCH; without the overwhelm of working for someone else turning this awesome moment into just another pitstop between waking up, and going to sleep.
Online business made moments like this possible for us. And it can do it for you too!
How do you spend your lunch? If you worked at home, how would you spend it?

Great post Shane! I’m excited to meet both of you at the 1DayBB in June! I totally agree with this post! I love how your viewpoint has shifted and you use lunch to recharge and inspire yourself… half the time I barely can take time to even eat at work!

Shane, an awesome post. Life is to short to hide away and should be enjoyed. While I have worked from home for a long time now, I have mostly traded time for money. I am in the shift of changing that. Recently we started home schooling our son and our lunch times mostly consist of playing card and board games together and occasionally watching reruns of old TV shows like The Greatest American Hero.
I originally found you guys on SPI and have been inspired greatly by your story. Thanks so much for sharing and encouraging us to take control and create the life we dream of.
