In today’s Q&A with S&J, Dr. Bridget Young (http://www.drbridgetyoung.com/) asks us:
“Do you have any suggestions on how to increase conversion on my email autoresponder?”
Shane: What’s up, guys? This is Shane and Jocelyn. We’re doing another Q&A with S&J. We are actually in Dallas at the airport. The only lighting we could get was with the toilets behind us right here. So we’ve got good lighting from the sun, and we can actually see the screen. We couldn’t see it before. We tried to do it the other way. It didn’t work. We thought we’d have this fancy Q&A with airplanes in the distance, and no, it totally failed. So you get toilets.
But we’re here to answer some of our patron’s questions from our Patreon feed about online business, and our question today is from Bridget, and Bridget says, “I am starting to get a bit of traction with a small $10.00 product that I offer via my auto-responder; used your template,” — good job, Bridget, way to go– “however, conversion has not been great so far. I’ve only sold one out of 250 subscribers that have seen this sequence. Do you have any suggestions for how to increase conversion?”
And yes, we do. The biggest suggestion we have is wait a little while before you change anything because you’ve only had 250 people go through your sequence. That is not a lot of data to really understand what is really happening. You’re getting a little frustrated too fast. It’s actually awesome, you’ve sold one in your first 250 people. Some people have 250 people go through their funnel, and they never sell anything.
Jocelyn: 250, I mean, it sounds kind of a lot, but you have to remember that a general conversion percentage is around 3-5%, and that means that out of every 100 people that see your offer, probably 95-97 are not going to take it.
Shane: And that’s also a tested conversion if you have a funnel, so this a brand new one.
Jocelyn: You need at least 400 people for what’s called statistical significance. That means you don’t really know anything for sure until you’ve had at least 400 go through–
Shane: And even then, it’s not perfect.
Jocelyn: It’s better to have more.
Shane: Yeah. So I would just say, leave it the way it is for right now. If you were going to test something different, you need to do what is called an A/B Split Test. You need to create the same exact funnel, but maybe one difference somewhere. If you look at your stats, and you said, “Well, this e-mail didn’t get a lot of open rights,” maybe you changed just the subject line in that, and you test them beside each other. But don’t wholesale change anything, don’t freak out right now. Just try to get it in front of more people, okay?
That’s basically what you need to do. Anybody starting out, don’t freak out. Let it ride, let it run. And usually the answer is go buy some ads and put more people into the funnel so that you can get better data.
